The Updating: Giving New Meaning to Old Customs [POEM]

poems about society
Written by Kiran Jhamb

No, no more plotting

For a solvent male.

The vanished rut has left behind

The attitudinal independence.

Let us rewind

Have an updating

Give new names

To certain ancient finds.

Today in marriage she brings

Not only the trappings of the home

But also a monthly income.

He is just the guest artist

– The womb is no more let.

Erase the anachronistic Kanyadaan*,

Which was always an anathema,

Instead enter the update Spermdaan.

Hard sell it. No mean feat

Let Manu and his ilk bleat.

*Kanyadaan – A ceremony in Hindu weddings, where the father gives away the daughter to the groom.
