What Women Love [POEM]

what women want
Written by Kiran Jhamb

We women love those three magic words.

“I Love you…” ? No –these are archaic.

We today are more prosaic.

The new avatars of those magic words are

Maid, TV and shopping

(Surfing the Net is the cream topping).

These three bring comfort.

The effort that job & family entails

To unwind the taught spring

Everything else fails.

‘Buy one get one free’-don’t wince

The plastic bucket with Surf or Mr. White

-No, no – there is no Mr. Right –

Brightly coloured synthetic flowers

In the brightly lit malls spending hours

Brings comfort to us.

Fingering materials, price tags

A quick decision, a victorious smile

And the overflowing bags vanquish boredom.

Ta ra ra rum, we women love

Those three magic words

Because we have – forget the streedhan* –

Our self earned money to splurge.

Streedhan – A traditional practice in Hindus primarily meant to provide women with some level of economic security in adverse situations like divorce, widowhood, etc. It is the portion of a woman’s wealth over which she alone has the power – to sell, gift, mortgage, lease or exchange)
