The Story Behind Congress Party’s Hand Symbol

Deity-of-Hemambika-Temple

Do the origins of Congress party’s palm of the hand symbol lie in the Emoor Bhagavathi temple in Kerala?

When Indira Gandhi visited Hemambika temple during the late 1970’s, she was impressed with the temple and the serene surroundings, with the beautiful Western Ghats in the backdrop.

It is then that she decided to keep the famous hand symbol of Congress from this temple’s main deity- Goddess Hemambika (the one with raised palms). She won the elections in 1980 and came back to power.
