The King of the Jungle [SHORT STORY]

african lion lioness jungle

She stretched and yawned and walked to the entrance. From where she stood, she could see the sun rising in the horizon over the open grasslands.
Ten years ago she had shifted to this place. She preferred the open grasslands better, but the caves offered better shelter to the young ones, and made for a better lookout to watch for any dangers.

It was after all her responsibility to guard the pride, and also to ensure no outsider entered their pride. She was the one who led hunts by their pride. She was the one who ensured everyone got their share of food from the hunt. She was the one who produced a new brood of cubs every so often.

Of course, there were two other lionesses to do that, but she was the strongest one, and this was the jungle.
Her mind strayed to the lion. He was strong, that was what had attracted her to join him. He was neither lazy nor incapable. It was just that nature had wired him differently.

He was there when required, for the heavier kills. He would sometimes scout the lands for new kills. He would help her with settling the disputes within members of the pride. But most of his time was spent in the open grasslands, where he lay basking in the sun and the glory of his title of the “King of the Jungle”.

The sun was up in the sky now. Turning back, she looked at all the cubs and other lionesses gathered around her. Her day had started.
